TRAILS

2009 Trail Map

2009 Coronet Peak Mountain Bike Trail Map - PDF

NEW FOR 2009!

Easy Cross-Country Novice/Intermediate trail opening plus 2-way access to our lookout point/picnic spot.

Fall Line - Downhill Trail

Starting from the top of the quad lift, we zig and zag down a large natural half pipe over natural rock features on a benched trail, before passing over some 'real rocks' and boosting up onto the main piste. Cross the open field of the piste and into a steeper section that eases back to high speed single track with some mellow air with a few off camber pieces, couple of jumps/drops, short rock garden, then gather speed as you weave down through natural bowls and rollers under the chair. Large user friendly terrain park type features including berms, hips, doubles and all those shapes we like, as we weave down the front face to finish just out front of the base building deck. A track that could be cruised or raged. The same track we race down could be ridden by intermediate riders at half the pace. A proper benched and formed trail including chicken shoots and intelligent flow, with plenty of room for expression. Dry, schist, crumbly, rocky, loose alpine soil, unless of course nature intervenes.

Rocky Gully - Downhill Cross Country Trail

At last, a trail that everyone can play on. A chairlift accessed, recreational trail, built with the medium travel, every day biker in mind. Cross country bikes or recreational bikes, it doesn't matter. As one of our mates always says, its not about the bike... this trail is all about fun and flow. Scenically stunning, this 7km trail starts at the top of the high speed quad chair and meanders and rolls its way on a fully benched and well formed shelf way out to the eastern reaches of Coronet Peak and back. Past stunning rock features, lush alpine vegetation and delicious vistas. Switch backs, berms, gentle roll overs and some optional mellow jumps for those wanting to try some small bite size aerial manoeuvres, yet cleverly designed to entertain the experienced rider too. More of a scenic, enduro kind of trail that will be great fun to ride with a group of friends, or safe enough to play around on your own. Even the good rider should take three times as long to descend this trail compared to the true down hill track that was hugely popular (tho' a little too challenging for some!) last year.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Bikers must ride on designated trails only and obey all posted signs and warnings.

Adequate Clothing

Helmets are compulsory and sturdy shoes with good tread or specific biking shoes are recommended at all times. Slick soled shoes or sandals are not permitted on rental bikes.

All loose clothing and packs should be firmly secured so that they do not interfere with the bicycles moving parts.

Bicycles

Bicycles with child carriers and tow behind bikes are not permitted on the chairlifts and are not recommended on trails.

Bikes must have two working hand brakes (no pedal brakes).

Sun Protection

The New Zealand sun can be brutal and at 1600 meters the sun has 30% greater intensity than it does at sea level. Coronet Peak has limited tree shelter for shade so mountain users are advised to protect themselves with a high SPF sunscreen and sunglasses with a good UV filter lenses.

Drink Adequate Water

When hiking or biking always carry adequate water. Water is available from the Cafe during operating hours.

Smoking

Smoking is not allowed on the mountain due to the combustible nature of the dry tussock grasses on the mountain and the associated fire risk.

Smoking will be allowed at the base building only and cigarette butts must be disposed in the bins provided.

The NZ National Series Events on 13 - 15 Feb will be a non-smoking event and therefore smoking will be prohibited on the entire mountain on these 3 days.

Trash

Coronet Peak is a national reserve and whilst we are priviledged to use the site we need to ensure we preserve it the way we found it. Please hang onto your rubbish and dispose of it correctly in the bins provided at the top of the chairlifts and at the base building.
