Mountain

Unfortunately Mt Hutt is closed today due to intense snow falls and strong winds that are forecast to peak at midday. At 5:30pm we have received 1.2m of new snow and are looking forward to a clearing in the weather so we can conduct avalanche control work and get the mountain open again.

Weather

Strong Southerlies all day. The snow is forecast to ease back a bit tonight but continue through to Saturday. If you check out our webcams you will notice something unusual - our Race timing hut appears to have been swept down onto Broadway by an avalanche...

Access Road

The access road is closed to all vehicles - we have an extreme avalanche hazard along many sections of the road. No point even trying - the gates are locked at the Info Booth where there is at least 40cm of snow on the road.

Don't Forget...

Check out our Facebook page for regular updates and photos as the storm passes through.

This pic was taken yesterday, and really captures what a cracking start we have had to the season here at Mt Hutt. With steady snowfall today and big snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow the best is yet to come. Photographer: Max Ahlberg Skier:Yann Bouduban

NZSki News

Around 1300 keen skiers and snowboarders helped Canterbury?s Mt Hutt celebrate its scheduled opening today (June 15). The keenest of all ? the seventy-or-so waiting for the Summit 6 and Quad chairlifts to crank into action for the season, including four who had slept overnight at the ski area to gain coveted ?First On The Lift? T-shirts ? were rewarded when both lifts started up fifteen minutes early at 8.45am.
